ABOUT SALADO FINE WOODWORKS

Salado Fine Woodworks is an establishment of skilled wood craftsmen dedicated to the reproduction of antique styles of furniture.  The company was founded in 1981 by a master craftsman dedicated to producing fine-quality, solid-wood reproductions using the same excellent construction techniques, tools, and designs that the early settlers of this country used to produce high-quality furniture that has proven to be functional, durable, and possesses a simple beauty of line that is still valued today.

Salado craftsmen have many years of experience in selecting the best wood available for each design, paying careful attention to the grains of the wood to be used on the doors and front and side panels of the furniture.

Salado craftsmen use proven, traditional joinery techniques. Mortise and tenon joints were used by early furniture makers and have proven to be the most effective method of joining posts, tables, doors, etc.  They still use this method today.

The use of bead and spline joinery in the backs of our furniture allows for the natural shrinking and swelling of the wood that occurs with climate changes.

Pioneer furniture makers used cut nails because of the added strength they provided. The slight taper of the cut nail bends down the wood fibre as the nail enters the wood creating a strong, secure joint. The appearance of the nail on the surface of the furniture adds to the authenticity of our reproductions.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF SALADO FINE WOODWORKS FURNITURE

Reproduction furniture, like the original pieces, should last for hundreds of years if given the proper care.  The finish can easily be maintained with regular dusting using a good quality furniture oil or even a spray polish.  We recommend occasional application of a paste wax.  These pieces, like the originals are made of white pine and are subject to seasonal or climatic shrinking and subject to dents and scratches.  These are characteristics of pine and simply add character to your furniture.  A product such as Old English Scratch Cover can be applied to darken scratches and white wood exposed by seasonal shrinking and drying.  These scratches or exposed areas will then blend with the surrounding wood.  The wood will continue to expand and shrink with the seasons, but after the exposed areas are once coated, they should not be noticeable again.  It is best to avoid moisture on the furniture surfaces, but spills wiped up quickly should not cause permanent damage.  If a damp glass or bowl leaves a discolored white area, this can be removed by applying paste wax.  Knots are a characteristic of pine and add to its beauty.  We use top=quality pine that has only smooth, tight knots.  They will not loosen and they will not effect the strength or durability of the furniture.  They will enhance its beauty.  Use and enjoy your furniture.  Don't be afraid to mark or dent it.  The usage marks add character and make your reproduction piece look even more like an antique.

FINISHES OF SALADO FINE WOODWORKS FURNITURE

UNFINISHED
All of
Salado furniture is available unfinished if desired. Unfinished pieces are carefully sanded and ready to finish.

STANDARD FINISH (SHOWN ON TOP HALF OF COLOR CHART)
The standard finish on
Salado furniture lines is achieved through the use of penetrating oil stain to provide the color desired. The oil stain penetrates deep into the wood fibers to become an integral, breathing part of the wood so that surface scratches, unless quite deep, will not expose bare wood. Over the stain, we apply three coats of a high-solids lacquer. This provides a hard, durable, protective finish. We then lightly sand the finish and apply paste wax, hand polishing this to achieve a smooth, silky patina.

UPGRADE ONE FINISH (SHOWN ON LOWER HALF OF COLOR CHART)
The Upgrade One Finishes are painted or washed finishes using our stock colors. The painted colors are applied to achieve the desired depth of color. If a wash is desired, excess pigment is then wiped off until the desired effect is achieved. Three coats of a high-solids sanding sealer are then applied over the color base. It is then lightly sanded, and a final coat of clear lacquer is applied. This final coat may be high-gloss, semi-gloss, or a satin finish.

UPGRADE TWO FINISH
The Upgrade Two Finish is a painted or washed finish using a custom color or a two-color finish which can combine paint and stain or two colors of paint or two colors of stain. For example, a piece may have a stained top and a painted body. After the base colors are applied, the same steps used on the Upgrade One Finish are followed to achieve the same durable finish. The final lacquer coat may be high-gloss, semi-gloss, or a satin finish. The Upgrade Two Finish is also available slightly distressed.
